Yes, they can be very valuable in top colors and clarities. Intense Red Spinels are considered the most valuable in the trade, then vivid blues and pinks. Fine larger Reds can fetch over $8,000 per carat and pinks over $4,000 per carat.
Yes, Spinel is a real gemstone. In fact, Spinels have appeared in Royal Jewelry for thousands of years, mistaken for Rubies and Sapphires. The Black Prince’s Ruby in The Imperial State Crown in Britain’s Crown Jewels, is in fact not a Ruby at all, but a Red Spinel.
It is a hard gemstone, rated 8 on the Mohs scale so is very suited to jewelry and its high refractive index (RI : 1.72) means that it can be very brilliant if cut well.
Spinel forms in the Cubic Crystal system. Gems that form in this system have an octahedral crystal habit, which resembles 2 pyramids connected together base to base.
It is an allochromatic gemstone, which means that it is colorless if it does not contain impurities (or trace elements). It is the trace elements that are the cause of color in these gems.
